During the past couple of years the U.S. appears to be operating in a more preemptive style of foreign policy. In constrast to the gung-ho, bomb you if you disagree with me, strategy that it has employed for the past decade. Just to mention a few of their moves one could remember: The ships in the South Atlantic, the missle shield in the Balkans and the disarmament deals with N.Korea.
The U.S. war machine seem to be in a colonial, rather than an “overlord” mode. They are positioning themselves all over the world, with new allies and possibilities, new clients (for weapon purchases)and new jumping stations. These, by the way, are the same tactics that named the Cold War era.
Russia, after a period of financial and political reconstruction, which was bound to leave holes in their defenses that the US could take advantage of, has now been forced to remember its strength and place in the world. Seeing their nemesis set foot in the region in a big way, the Russians had no other course of action but this imperialistic bull$&!t that they are pulling right now.
They could not allow the U.S. to become protectors of the Georgian region and control all the oil, drug and trade routes from Asia to Europe. Not to mention the spies, missiles and money they would instate just 1000 miles from Moscow.
What I want to say, is that although I strongly disagree with Russia move to recognize the Georgian states of Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent and deploy armed forces on them, I didnt expect anything different. The U.S. cannot play diplomatic cold war games, and not expect a response from an adversary such as Russia. They shouldn’t expect silence from anyone in fact.
My money is on Russia in this one. NATO will not dare push to the point of combat and the US is in the middle of an economic and political repositioning that does not allow it to start a conflict of these proportions. Russia will not let this region go since it is a big part of its economic and geopolitical status. So heat is out of the question. That leaves us with freezing cold. Prepare to be left in the dark.
