Russian missles on Cuba? US cryes wolf...

Russia’s Izvestia newspaper this week quoted a “highly placed source” as saying Russia could land Tu-160 supersonic bombers nicknamed “White Swans” in Cuba in response to a planned U.S. missile defense shield in Europe that Moscow opposes.

Russian missles on Cuba? US cryes wolf...

The cuban government said that it doesn’t have to explain itself or ask for forgiveness from anyone. The cuban officials made no comments on whether the report was true or false.

Moscow has been stating its strong disagreement with the creation of a US “missle shield” in the balcan region. A region way to close to home for the Russians to allow an American jumping point of this magnitude to be established. The Russian objections have fallen on deaf ears for years now, making it look like the US does not even acknowledge its former adversary’s existense.

It would seem that now, Moscow has gone on the offensive and is resurfacing an issue that brought us on the brink of WW3 in 1962. If this is merely a bluff, made to exclamate Russia’s point on the US balcan missle shield, remains to be seen. On the other hand if it is real, there isn’t much the US can do to stop them. Short of an offensive that is.

This is not the 60s anymore and the world’s “superpowers” can not claim our piece of mind without any moral repercushions. They can no longer claim to be fighting any evil (such as communism). It is nowadays obvious that warmongery and gun sales profits are the only reasons for the suffering of millions. And we the people can not claim innocence since it is us that voted these people into power and also allow them to play war games on our backs.

Today’s Russia is only a shadow of the erstwhile Soviet Union that failed to stand up to John F. Kennedy’s firmness in defending the US. Present leadership in Russia cannot even think of Khrushchev, leave alone reenacting his (failed) act.

Very astute comment. But still, incompetence doesn’t mean that they cant make stupid moves. And when a weak leadership is pushed to its limits maybe it will make mistakes that the communists didnt, like answering the americans for example. God forbid!

True. The ”highly placed source” may be an under-informed official who made the irresponsible statement.

JFK did not make the same stand with the soviets as Reagan did when he defeated them in the cold war.. The war that broke their back.

Then of course, Clinton gave Russia’s new gov’t how many BILLIONS in aid while they were still launching rockets to space?

Keep in mind... The USA needs a leader who can take that 3AM call about the soviets scrambling their MIGs and rockets... While also dealing with terrorism.

This news report just goes toshow that we need a seasoned leader like John McCain and not some wet behind the ears Chicago Politcal rookie such as Obambi.

We would still keep the world safe because the Russians would know that they cannot screw arounbd with a man who’s willing to go to war to protect the world from terrorists.

Not that I would endorse Bush as president again... But he did keep the employment levels high for 7 of his 8 years.

Bush has been the target of merciless and irresponsible criticism. He took on the terrorists with all his energy, in spite of this.

When that horrible thing happened 7 years ago, Bush was right doing what he did, but his war on terror is going too far, like the re-establishment of the 4th Fleet here in South America.

No country likes to have an American fleet around, especially now that Brazil discovered huge reserves of oil.

I fail to understand why the 4th fleet is needed, that too near S. America. The inability, or even unwillingness, of some S. American countries to curb drug trade could be one of the reasons. The vitriolic Chavez another. Had it been in the 18th or 19th century the vituperative talks of Chavez would have made his country the permanent home of the armies of other countries.

Hi Asmita,

The several thousand women who were mercilessly tortured and killed by the Taliban, the countless Iraqi Shias and Kurds who were killed as fleas by Saddam and his men, the never ending armed suppression of the under-developed and uneducated people of Darfur by the Sudanese government, the innocent Israelis who get killed by Palestinian terrorists, and the innocent Palestinians who suffer at the hands of a well established Israeli government while they lack one of their own are all my relatives, friends, and members of my family.

My heart bleeds for them and the only umbrella (though a tattered one) that shields these people is the US and its war on terror.

I would not think that the present leadership in Russia is as weak as you several of you make it out to be. Contrarily Bush and his chose successor are every bit walking the talk.

And placing missiles in Cuba is fair enough. US can do it in Poland then why can’t the Russians in communist Cuba?

And Mario you make a very legitimate comment about the arms’ race. But somehow you forget the fact that this is as much about showing how big of a power you really are. And this brings in several rewards as well.

Let the facts:

First, when there was a coup d’etat that took Chavez to power (briefly) the United States supported the scammers (always good to remember that ALL dictatorships of South America were supported by the U.S.). What he could have another reaction, even more with that history of interventions in this region?

Second, the problem of drugs will not be solved by placing ships of war by patrolling the South Atlantic, but with economic aid. Countries such as Bolivia and Paraguay are deprived of resources.

Third, recent discoveries of oil reserves (14 billion barrels) here in Brazil can be a stimulus to the ”patrolling”. Although Brazil has maintained excellent business relations with the United States, has always maintained an independent stance and is seeking a bigger integration with the South American countries, which reduces much to U.S. influence. Perhaps this fleet is an attempt to pressure the American countries, something that will not work because the alliances are mature and economic regional integration is progressing (the discussion of creating a single currency among the Mercosur countries is a demonstration of that).
2 Stars
You are very right about the drugs and dictators. It is a historical fact.

I also think that you are right about the Americans being nervous about S.A. countries new found develo0pment. Not only the Mercosur is getting more organized but the whole political scene there is showing great promise.

I agree that the ships are there to demonstrate how powerfull a neighbour the US is. Although I fear for the worse secret plans.

I think that the news is that Russian strategic bombers might use Cuba as a refueling base and not as a permanent air base. Also, I don't think there would be any missile installation there. Most certainly not.

Yes, a refuelling base for ”White Swan” (I think they are called) bombers. That still means a substantial military presense on the island.

This is all brinkmanship. The Russians can never ever get back the old status of superpower that they held before the disintegration of the Soviet Union. What Russia is doing today is merely playing to the gallery of the rising Russian nationalists in the country.

With all the petrol in its coffers who knows what Russians might actually accomplish. The Russian nationalism is getting more manifest increasingly and with the US on a slide, Russia is sure to regain considerable clout back.

True the old Soviet status is hard to get back to, but that is only because the political realities are much more in favor of a multi-polar world.

Has not Chavez done all that can be expected of a dictator?

Bringing industries under state control; suppressing opposition; amending or rewriting the constitution to suit his aims; getting, or trying to get, life time guarantee for the position; more importantly, indulging in abusive verbal campaign against opposition in his own country and leaders of other countries; and so on. The list can never be conclusive.

There is no way Russia can be militarily defeated by any country in the world. With its huge oil reserves and booming economy Russia must be given enough respect that belongs to it rightfully at the world stage. The West should be cautious while dealing with Russia. The present crisis between Russia and the West is entirely because of the West's attitude against Russian interests.

It makes a lot of sense for Russia to have some kind of presence in the South Atlantic. Brazil has found oil, now the 4th Fleet is being redeployed in the area. Target Venezuela? Brazil? Maybe not, but then no one knows. The US Navy is where the oil is. Let Russia have bombers in the area.

The Bolivarian project is an old dream in that region. The first explorers were the Spanish and Portuguese. Then came the English in the twentieth century, U.S. signed up as a dominant power in the region, hampering the South American integration. For a long time the countries here meet the US interests.

There is big distrust with the United States because they didn’t concern to negotiate multilaterally. Just arrived and impose their interests

Cuba, Fidel, Morales are just symbols of resistance here. Are examples of democrats presidents ? Hell no! But it’s easy to understand what they did and do.

Hi Fariha Jamil,

The present crisis is due to Iran’s persistent pursuit of its nuclear goal which many countries in the region want to see stopped.

Iran, just like India and Pakistan, is an independent and sovereign country and has the right to possess nuclear arms if it wants. (I am saying this though I am fully opposed to the spread of nuclear weapons, and oppose the possession of these weapons by any country on earth.)

But it is the declared objective of Iran, that of completely destroying another country called Israel, that makes Iran unqualified to come into possession of nuclear weapons.

Hey Fariha Jamil, my friend...
Iran has threatened to USE THESE WEAPONS ON ANOTHER COUNTRY. Israel is their choice.
Regardless of the choice.
No nation is sovereign enough to plan to destroy andother natiuon with nukes and claim that is why they are making the nuclear arsenol. (Then deny it of course).

It’s like some fruitcake walking into an Arizona gun store shouting about he wants to buy a rifle, a pistol and ammo so he can go out and shoot the ”punks’ on the park bench across the street feeding the ducks in the park.

It would be wrong to sell that man the guns and even worst to let him leave the store in a rage to kill those ’punks’ by some other means.

There is a time to step in and a time to do nothing. This is a time to step in and not allow this nation murder the millions of people they plan to murder with their nuclear bombs.

And.. you know that!

Dear Fariha,

Let us not use what the mad people say, in support of any argument.

If the US itself arranged for the WTC attack, the same US should also be accused of bringing Ahmedinejad to power in Iran to parrot the script of the CIA which will justify the presence of the US forces in the region. The Soviet theory that everything is by the US, for the US, and to the US is absurd and stale.

Dear Fariha,

Let us not forget that the US forces came to the Middle East to liberate Kuwait from the terrible onslaught of Saddam’s army. This is conveniently forgotten by many.

The US is not opposed to any country possessing nuclear arms. India and Pakistan are examples for this. Both the countries pursued the quest for nuclear power on their own and now possess the arms without provoking the slightest opposition from the US.

But, the often declared (and later denied) objective of Iran is the cause of all the problem.

The 9/11 attack was not done from the US government. Youtube and the freaks who post garbage on it are not meant o be taken seriously. The internet is full of false info from nutcases that believe the X-Files are real life stories.
You need to get the facts and realize that while the USA has been supporting your country and so many other countries with aid and direct cash assistance, you have been hating us.

The last atomic weapon used against another country in wartime was the US against Japan. We had to end the war.

It should have been dropped in a more remote location but the Japanese were too proud of fighters to be frightened by a big bang. The death toll was needed and very very sad.

Iran has already claimed that this is what they want to do in highly populated areas. You are wrong to want to allow it and besides, Pakistan would get the fall-out.

Indeed Paulraj. But for sure, tyranny is wrong no matter who does it... in Islam a Muslim ruler is supposed to be a servant of God who is to serve His creation. As far as the Iranian or US presidents are concerned, we need to study their lives, both as leaders as well as their private life, to form any opinion.

Dear Fariha, present day rulers are ordinary men and women like you and me. We cannot expect much from them in terms of character and qualities as prescribed in the scriptures.

But unfortunately, we have to be put up with them and manage to survive the troubles they heap on us. I have read that Ahmedinejad is a simple person leading a pious life, though well educated. But, why is this rigid foreign policy? Politics has limited the ability of thinking in many men.

Do you really believe that Iran would attack Israel or Europe with nuclear weapons? I am almost sure you do not, because who would want to see United States, Israel, France and England bombing their country? Even Russia hasn’t done that.

Remember what happened before the U.S. attacked Iraq? False information disseminated through the media? The creation of a widespread fear to justify an attack? It’s happening again ...

However, you are practicing double standards; you say things about other countries and dont want anyone else to say anything about your nation...I respect your country and you and if you wish no one should say nothing about it, your country should also mind its own business.

Plus, no one can be ALWAYS right. This is too high a statement. WHOEVER would try to play GOD will be defeated badly... here or hereafter.

Although I was saying that partially out of feeling the sting of having my country ’put down’ I was also joking and saying it lighthearted (jokingly).
Typos excluded...

The thing is...
America was founded by people that have been kicked, stepped on, abused, beaten down, cheated, restricted, confined and murdered for our beliefs.
We, as a nation and as a Republic, fight for these ideals of liberty and freedom (cue the music) to be shared everywhere, by everyone.

Not all of our plans turn out perfectly, but we are tryng to do what is right and we should not be ”put down” or degraded because of it.

If it were not for the USA:
The French would be speaking German.
The Australians would be speaking first Japanese, than Russian.
India would be a third world country instead of a rapidly growing competitor with the world’s free markets. (Sure I’d love to wipe out India’s child labor and I am personally working on that plan).
Europe would be under the iron curtain and speaking Russian as well.

America is, as far as I can see, serving God as a nation in a Christian way, not by killing those opposing Islam as the Islamic countries would do if they had the power... We serve God by serving mankind to the best of our ability.

We would not write a book claiming that in politics (see above), we would serve the Muslim faith before anything else.
Obama wrote that and many lost people follow the evil man.

That hurts me more than anything you could ever say, my friend.

Brother i love you with all my heart. The good that US has done to mankind is unquestionable and i sincerely hope that whoever has power, be it Christains, Hindus or Muslims, serve the creation of GOD in the christain way. In fact, there is no difference between christain way and Islamic way since we believe in the Christ as the true messenger of God as much as the christains do.

Islam no where teaches to slaughter any nation, in fact, there is a complete system in our religion to look after all and live in peace with all. If any leader or nation voilates it, it does not fall in the category of being called Muslims.

Just for your information brother, Prophet Muhammad when conquered Makkah forgave each and every non-Muslim. Even those who had stoned and expelled him from Makkah were forgiven. The women who chewed the liver of his uncle was forgiven. So i just request you to judge our nation by our best examples.

Another interesting thing is that in Islam, the geaographical boundries are just secondary. Muslims all over the world are one nation. I mean to us, Islam comes first and then our individual countries... my identity is Islam and not Pakistan... the entire land is the land of GOD....

I sincerely pray and hope all nations and religions love and support each other and we practice what Prophet Muhammad and Jesus taught us :)
